Menard Asia has completed a ground improvement project using the Controlled Modulus Column method for the Harbour Stockyard owned by PT Krakatau Steel Tbk in Banten, Indonesia.

Indonesia - Stockyard Harbour Krakatau Steel - Ground Improvement

PT Krakatau Steel Tbk is the largest steel maker in Indonesia, headquartered in Cilegon, Banten. The factory is set on a 280-hectare plot in the western end of Banten and adjacent to the Sunda Strait, and where the Krakatoa volcano and island, from which the company takes its name, are located. Menard Asia has completed a ground improvement project using the Controlled Modulus Column method for the Harbour Stockyard owned by PT Krakatau Steel Tbk.

Project Overview

In this project, there are 4 stockyards with total area of 20,000 m2. The stockyards were typically filled up with coal, cock, and various minerals to produce steel. The density per square meter is between 15 and 25 tons. As the stockyards were in operation without any ground treatment, they had experienced continuous settlement during operations. Menard Asia was employed to strengthen the stockyards and stop the settlement.

Ground Condition

The soil condition consists of backfilling from the steel factory that is containing slack and boulders from the top platform to the depth of 7 m, . Furthermore, from the depth of 7 to  20 m, there is a layer of sand to loose sand and soft clay.

Menard Solution

Menard Asia solution is the application of a Controlled Modulus Column with a diameter of 420 mm using rebar and steel cages to protect existing structures. Menard Asia has successfully completed the project and meets the specified requirement for bearing capacity and settlement control. This project was completed in 8 months with excellent results.
