Menard Asia completed the ground improvement for Container Port at Sapangar Bay with Prefabricated Vertical Drain in Malaysia

Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP) is strategically located along the busy shipping routes between the Far East and Europe. This port has taken over the container operations from Kota Kinabalu Port, is positioned as the premier transhipment hub for the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). A port of international standing, SBCP boasts state-of-the-art facilities, the ability to handle more container volume, more efficient and effective operations, and greater competitive freight charges.

Project Overview

The project is located at Sapangar Bay, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia. The reclamation works involved ground improvement for the underlying soft clay deposits using Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) in combination with a fill surcharge. The design and construction of the ground improvement scheme was carried out on a turnkey contract.

Ground Condition

The soils below the reclamation area are soft marine clays to a depth of 20 to 25 m below the seabed level. Adding the reclamation fill on top of these soft clays would result in a long-term settlement problem. Thus, it is imperative to accelerate the settlement of the soft clays during the construction stage to eliminate future settlement.

Menard Solution

The prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) with surcharge was identified by Menard Asia as the most economical ground improvement solution for the project within the allowable construction period. As such, Menard Asia installed a total of 3,000 points of vertical drains to depths up to 25 m below the seabed level. Approximately 70% of the points were installed offshore on a barge with a water depth of up to 5 m. Menard Asia successfully finished the project in June 2005 and met all the client's expectations.
