GMF AeroAsia (PT Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia Tbk) is an Indonesian company that specializes in aircraft maintenance repair and overhaul. In 2013, GMF planned to expand its hangar area which is used as a facility for aircraft repairs. It is necessary to increase the load-bearing capability of the area for the hangar construction. Menard Asia participated in soil improvement in this project using the controlled modulus column method.
The project consists of the construction of a new Hangar and Apron for the Maintenance of Airplanes up to the size of Boeing 737 at Garuda Maintenance Facilities. The structural pavement consists of a rigid reinforced concrete slab (PCC) of 40 cm thick, a CTBC of 15 cm, and a crushed aggregate sub-base of 15 cm. The given design load of the aircraft and the structural pavement is 5 ton/m².
The subsoil of the project site consisted of layers of medium-stiff to very stiff silty clay with NSPT of 5 to 20 (CPT qc < 5 MPa) overlying a hard silty clay or siltstone with NSPT > 25 (CPT qc > 6 MPa). The thickness of the medium stiff to stiff layer varies from 5 to 16 m. The groundwater level is about 4 to 5 m below the existing ground surface.
Since the project site is located within the operating Soekarno-Hatta International Airport facility, the sensitivity towards noise, vibration, and environmental impacts remains a top priority. Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) is chosen as the ground improvement solution for this project as it can meet the client’s requirements in terms of low noise, vibration and environmental impact. More importantly, CMC has been proven to be a very cost effective solution based on our past experience working at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Terminal 3 Apron Extension works to improve the properties of the treated soils.
