#MenardAsiaSeries – Our Stone Columns Project in Malaysia
Stone Columns #SC are formed with various methods using different equipment depending on the depth and diameter of the columns and the parameters of the soil to be improved. The popularity of this method resulted in its widespread use.
In #Malaysia, Menard Asia has treated the ground of Lebuhraya Pantai Timur Phase 2 by using various ground improvement techniques. One of the techniques adopted was the Stone Columns. This technique was employed in Package 5A of the 184 km expressway extending from Jabur until Kuala Terengganu.
The stone columns were applied to support the construction of a very high embankment over soft clay and silt. The stone columns had ensured the stability of the 15.5 m high road embankment during and after construction. In addition, the post construction settlement was also within the allowable limit of 25 cm.
This project was started in December 2007 and completed in May 2008.

Machine for Stone Columns
The construction uses a base machine (either crane or excavator) with a vibrating probe to feed stone into the ground, forming a vertical column of stone. Some stone column rigs feed stone into the ground through the vibrating probe, exiting at the bottom, and other rigs require the stone to be fed in from the ground surface down the vertical hole in the ground. Both types use a vibrating probe that densifies the surrounding soils and the stone fed into the ground.
